Some time ago, I watched the dvd, “The Blind Side” which was based on the true story of a homeless black teenager, Michael Oher, who was adopted by a rich white family, the Tuohys, and how he eventually became a millionaire in his own right after being drafted in 2009 by a professional American football team, the Baltimore Ravens.
It was a very inspiring and touching movie (I highly recommend you to watch this movie or at least read about Michael’s life story) , and I was still thinking about the movie as I laid on my bed trying to sleep … then it struck me … the Tuohys were not the first people who tried to help Michael Oher.
Before Michael Oher’s chance encounter with the Tuohys, he was crashing on an acquaintance, Mr Tony Henderson’s couch. Tony, wanting to fulfill his mother’s dying wish to enroll his son, Steven in a private Christian school, also brought Michael along to meet the headmaster and tried to enroll Michael into the school as well.
Michael was admitted into the school but he had to live out on the streets with his entire possessions of a few pieces of clothing in a plastic bag because Tony did not have the means to provide for him. The Tuohys were driving past Michael on a cold wintry evening, and when she saw Michael dressed only in a T-shirt and shorts despite the bitter cold, Mrs Tuohy brought him home to stay for the night. Michael later lived with the Tuohys on a permanent basis. They engaged a private tutor for Michael to bring him up to speed with his studies and Michael eventually earned a football scholarship with the University of Mississippi, and became a professional football player after graduation.
Tony Henderson wanted to and did help Michael, letting him crash on his couch for a while and getting him admitted into the private school but after that, he could not do much for him due to his limited means. Michael would still be stuck in a rut if he had stayed on with Tony because Tony 心有馀而力不足 i.e. he had a more than willing heart but not enough means.
In contrast to Tony, the Tuohys were quite wealthy and therefore had more than enough means. However, all that means nothing to Michael if the Tuohys were not willing to help Michael i.e. 力有馀而心不足. However, thankfully, the Tuohys were more than willing to help, and the rest is history – Michael graduated from high school and received a college scholarship. After he graduated from college, he was drafted by the Baltimore Ravens in 2009 and then on 3 Feb 2013, he won the Super Bowl with the Ravens!
Many Christians still think of our Daddy God as 力有馀而心不足 , i.e. they believe God is able to help but can’t believe that He is willing to do so. That is wrong believing! Jesus in Mark 1:40-42 demonstrated to us that God is both able and willing to help:
40 A man with leprosy came and knelt in front of Jesus, begging to be healed. “If you are willing, you can heal me and make me clean,” he said.
41 Moved with compassion, Jesus reached out and touched him. “I am willing,” he said. “Be healed!”
42 Instantly the leprosy disappeared, and the man was healed.
Hallelujah! Our God not only has the means to help; He is also more than willing to help us!
If you need God’s help in the situation you are facing, go ahead and boldly ask Him for help. Our God is 力有馀而心有馀!
