“Your love and truth are all that keeps me together.” – Ps40:11
There are days of brokeness and aloneness in everyone’s lives. No one is exempt from having ‘one of those days’. Sometimes we wake up with so much anticipation in our hearts and a skip in our steps but we meet with circumstances that stumble the skip and rains on our parade.
How would you react?
Honestly, I blink back tears. It’s okay to feel sad but it is important not to dwell in that place for too long. Self-pity is a slippery slope.
The Psalmists says ‘Your love and Truth are all that keeps me together’. Why?
When you know how much He loves you – just close your eyes and picture the stripes He bore, the nails that drove into His palms, the spittle that clung to His beard, the agony that He bore, the way He fell at the weight of the Cross, the pain of stretching His body thin on the Cross and the breathing difficulties that tore into his lungs which burned from the torturous circumstances & how He WILLINGLY went ahead with it when He could have walked away- you know how SMALL that hiccup is in the palm of His hands.
My 3 year old has small hands. Sometimes he tries to pick up too many toys in them (have to admit he has a good grip) and they fall out from his hands as he transports them around. He gets frustrated and I would either advice him to carry it one at a time, or offer to help hold the toys for him as he put them away. That’s like us and Abba Daddy. Our hands are too small to handle the load we try to bear so we need to put them in His hands and trust that His hands are large enough.
His Truth is His Word. Jesus is not like us. He is a man of His Words. If He says that “IT IS FINISHED”, it IS finished. And if it is done, why should we keep fretting about it and getting ourselves in a bind? =)
If we know what His promises are, what He has accomplished, then we don’t have to worry or feel flustered in the face of our daily challenges because He has said it and what He has said, He completes.
I read His Word and it says “The joy of the LORD is your strength” (PS 28:7) so I am all the more encouraged to remain in His joy even when the day and its troubles come upon me because each trouble tries to strip me of strength. I can be sad but if I allow the JOY of the LORD – this joy that cannot be extinguished emotionally because it is founded on the truth of His victory on the cross- to be my strength, the enemy cannot get me down.
I read His Word and it says “He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak.” (Isaiah 40:29) & I know I can receive strength from Him and power from Him when I am weak. I recall 2 Cor 12:9 which says, “Each time he said, ‘My grace is all you need. My power works best in weakness.’ So now I am glad to boast about my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ can work through me.”
And this is how His love and His truth keeps me from falling apart.
The best cheerleader you can have is the same Father who saw you from a distance, hitched up His garments, ran up towards you and hugged you before you could even apologise or show remorse. He celebrates over you with song- “The LORD your God is with you, the Mighty Warrior who saves. He will take great delight in you; in his love he will no longer rebuke you, but will rejoice over you with singing.” – Zeph 3:17
Let His love, let His truth be the glue that holds you together. It is a divine super glue… a superabounding grace glue… a deep, comforting shalom He has given us that the world cannot give.
